Gemini Solar to Build Big in Austin

it’s for one of the largest solar photovoltaic plants in the
country — a 30-megawatt plant in Austin, Texas, that’s expected

oil.
HOUSTON – The city of Austin, Texas, approved
on Thursday a 30-megawatt solar power plant, the biggest of its
kind in the U.S. The measure passed despite weary opposition
from leaders in the city's industrial community, a group that
pays 83% of the municipal "green power" tab.

Gemini Solar Snags First Utility Contract

It’s official: Gemini Solar Development, a new joint venture
between Suntech Power Holdings and Renewable Ventures, has
scored its first project.
The City of Austin on Thursday awarded Gemini a $250 million,
25-year contract to sell electricity from a 30-megawatt solar
power plant. The plant, which is scheduled to begin producing
electricity in 2010 to customers of city-owned Austin Energy,
will be built on 350 acres of city-owned land, the city said.
Gemini, based in San Francisco, will be responsible for operating
and maintaining the power plant. (Read

Power Plant to be One of the Largest Photovoltaic Systems in
U.S.
SAN FRANCISCO March 5, 2009 – Gemini Solar Development
Company LLC announced today that it has been selected to build
a 30 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar power plant for Austin
Energy, a municipal electric utility in Austin, Texas.
This landmark solar power plant will be built on 300 acres of
city-owned land located approximately 25 miles east of Austin.
Totaling 30MW, the solar array will be operational by the end
of 2010. When completed, the solar generated power will eliminate
approximately 30,000 tons of CO2 per year and provide enough
electricity to power 5,000 homes.
